Sleep Number Bed:  Is it a Glorified Air Mattress?

The Sleep Number Bed is a very novel idea, especially for couples.  Pretty much, it is a bed that you are able to control the firmness or softness of the mattress with an electronic air pump.  I have seen all sorts of commercials for the bed and I was convinced that it was the neatest looking mattress that I had ever seen, I made a goal to own one some day, as I have a pretty ragged mattress right now.  But the high price tag (2000-4000 dollars) made me wonder if the sleep number bed is really worth the money and the hype. 

I started by looking at the website.  The website is slick and informative, there are several different quizzes that you can take that will help you to determine your “sleep number” (the level of firmness that will make you the most comfortable) and there are lots of testimonials from satisfied customers.  I was impressed but decided to look into things a little more.

The best place to look for real unbiased reviews is on third party websites, so I looked on a website called epinions.  There are tons of reviews (226 to be exact) and overall the Sleep Number Bed only got 3 out of five stars.  Now if I am paying thousands of dollars for a mattress, I would want it to get better reviews than that.  One particular review caught my eye…

The review was from a man who claimed to be a chiropractor (whether or not he actually was is up to you to decide, but he sure seemed to know a lot!)  He had a relatively nice mattress but when he found a discount price on the Sleep Number Bed, he decided to give it a try.  He said that when the mattress arrived, it was made out of cheap plastic and foam and he instantly thought that he had paid too much.  But he set it up and gave it a try.  There are detailed instructions on how to determine your “sleep number” and he and his wife decided on about the same number.  But due to the fact that he was much heavier than his wife, his part of the bed sunk in much farther than hers and it made it difficult for them to sleep together.  Also, he said that the Sleep Number Mattress would slowly loose pressure and then they would have to fiddle with the remotes all night.  Needless to say, this man was not pleased.  He called the Mattress a cross between an air mattress and a hammock.

• Sleep Number Bed Conclusion

Most of the reviews that I read were similar.  Some people were pleased with the Sleep Number Mattress but still complained about the cheap material that it was made of.  This mattress just cost too much for the quality of product that you are getting.  Go try one out at a store, you will see for yourself that it is not worth it.
