Valerian Root Side Effects

What is Valerian Root?

The valerian root is believed to have both sedative and anxiolytic (treats anxiety) properties. The valerian plant is native to Europe and parts of Asia and centuries ago was used a scent for perfumes. The Greeks and Romans used valerian roots to treat insomnia. Because of its history in medicinal use, most studies involving the valerian root have attempted to identify its mechanism of action. Some believe that a certain compound within the valerian root interacts with the GABA neurotransmitter receptor. GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) plays a role in regulating the excitability of nerves and it’s also directly responsible for the regulation muscle tone. But there are no conclusive studies which show how the valerian root works in the body to promote sedation.

In addition to a lack of understanding as to how valerian works, many question if valerian actually works. Studies involving valerian and a placebo tested patients who struggled with insomnia and found no statistical difference between those who took the placebo versus those who took valerian. Other studies, however, have demonstrated that when valerian is taken over longer periods of time it seems to be more effective in treating insomnia and anxiety. It is unclear whether or not valerian is an effective sedative and anti-anxiety supplement; it probably works for some and not for others.

Side Effects of Valerian Root

It is important to understand the risks and side effects associated with valerian root supplements. Some users complained of agitation, headaches and nightmares. This may be due to the fact that some people lack the ability to properly digest valerian root. One study found that valerian root “tends to sedate the agitated person and stimulate the fatigued person, bringing about a balancing effect on the system.”

As we discuss the other possible side effects, keep in mind that dosage recommendations for valerian root are far from concrete and can vary from 2-10 grams daily. So the amount you ingest each day and your individual ability to tolerate valerian root will likely determine how severe these side effects may be.

While taking valerian root you may experience: dizziness, depression, stomachache, apathy, anxiety, and/or night terrors. You may also experience an allergic reaction which could result in skin rashes, hives, and/or difficulty breathing. Also, because the compounds present in valerian root act to depress the nervous system you should avoid taking other depressants such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opiates as a combination of these could lead to serious health risks. Long-term use may result in cardiac problems and in some cases mental illness.

It should be noted that the majority of people do not experience these side effects, but if you do you should stop taking valerian root and contact your physician.

Final Thoughts

The decision to use valerian root is one I would talk to my physician about before trying it. Its effectiveness is unclear and its side effects range from very minor to severe. If you struggle with insomnia and anxiety I would see what other drugs are out there that are more proven and possibly safer too.
